CNN Underscored: The High-Waisted Jeans

I was recently featured on CNN Underscored, and I decided to continue the conversation about high-rise and high-waisted jeans here with you.
My mantra is simple: when you get your jeans right, you get the look right. Bottoms are one of the most important parts of a closet, and jeans are worth the investment because of their cost per wear. You reach for them so often that the value quickly pays off. For a balanced wardrobe, I usually recommend two to three tops for every bottom, which makes it even more important to choose jeans you love and feel confident in. High-waisted styles deliver on that, creating a flattering base you can build endless outfits around.
When it comes to finding your perfect pair, start by checking the rise. Ten inches and above usually counts as high waisted. Then look at the fabric content and the cut. A little stretch in the blend helps the jeans adapt to your curves, and the wash sets the tone. Darker washes feel polished while lighter ones feel more casual.

When you try them on, pay attention to where you usually have fit issues. Do they gap at the waist or feel too tight in the hips? Notice what makes you feel your best. For some it is a snug fit, for others a more relaxed silhouette. That feeling will guide you toward the right pair.
My best advice is that jeans should fit comfortably at your widest point. And if they feel like a maybe, it really means no.
Look for denim with a little elastane or spandex blended in. It gives stretch and comfort without losing shape. A cotton-heavy blend will feel classic and structured, while a touch of stretch makes them easier to wear all day.
You might have heard “high-rise” and “high-waisted” used as the same thing, but there’s a small difference. High-rise usually sits above the hips, while a true high-waist finishes right at or slightly above the waistline. That’s what gives the classic elongating effect.

High-waisted jeans naturally create a balanced silhouette. They sculpt and emphasize the waist, bringing harmony to your look. Even layered under sweaters or blazers, they give that instant feeling of structure and confidence. For petite frames, they help elongate the legs. For curvier shapes, they highlight the waist and enhance natural curves.
It’s one of those wardrobe pieces that never loses its place. They flatter, they balance, and they bring so much to your everyday style.
